The Bible Testifies Of God's Love For Us.

Recently I debated a young man who hates the God of the Bible. We debated through e-mails sent to each other, and he challenged me in my faith of the absolute truth of the Bible and God. This young man had a very different view of the God of the Bible I know and love. He was especially angry with God as described in the Old Testament. The god he saw in the Old Testament was a harsh judge, and killed many people because they would not bow down to him. The God of the Bible he saw was a god who holds a gun to your head and forces you to believe in him or spend eternity in hell. This young man believes the God of the Bible gives no freewill to man to decide for himself (even though he proves and displays his freewill God has given him by his own total rejection of the Bible.). He sees no evidence in the Bible that God is love. As I shared with this man over 4 days and hours of correspondence, I found it sad and troubling that he could not see the evidence of the love God has for us. He could not see it in the world we live in; he could not see it in God's Holy Word - the Bible. This experience has inspired me to write this chapter and show the evidence from the Bible that God is love.

In The Beginning!

I am going to start this chapter by going back to the beginning- before time began. We are going to zip through the history of the Bible to see the love of God. Creation is the first set of evidence the Bible reveals that shows of the love God has for us. This is the God of the Bible I see and love.

Genesis 1: 1 1In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Genesis 1: 26 - 28 26And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

28And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

From the very beginning God shows his love by first creating a perfect world and universe for us to live in. God describes it as very good...and it is very good. Even now, with all the destruction that Noah's flood caused and what man has done to the earth we live in- earth is still very beautiful, and so is the universe. We can see the awesomeness of God when we look at the sun rise or set, when we gaze at the stars in the sky, when we see beautiful blue waters, or when we look at mountain tops. God's creation was his very first gift to us.

God then gives us the most special gift of all...life. Not only that, but He creates us in His own image; in his own likeness. He then gives us the keys to what he created. He gives us the authority to rule over all He created. He entrusted us to have dominion over everything because He loves us so. There is no question the first two chapters of Genesis is revealing a God of love, and mankind is his special creation.

The Fall of Man

Chapter three of Genesis describes the worst event in all of history. Man makes a choice (using his own freewill) to disobey the Creator of the Universe and Maker of all life. Chapter three describes the fall of man. It describes the event when sin first entered the world. Because of man- pain, suffering, and death entered God's perfect creation. The curse of sin has caused all of creation to cry out. It was not God who broke the relationship with man, but it was man saying to God, "I do not need you." (Are you saying this to God as you read this?) This one event has altered what the original plan God had for us. Even though we broke relationship with Him, God never stopped loving us. Chapter Three in Genesis is the dividing line. From Genesis chapter three to the last chapter in the book of Revelation, God uses the Bible to bring us back into relationship with Him. God foreknew we would sin, and he had a plan in place before time began to mend our broken relationship.

Titus 1: 1-2 1Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ for the faith of God's elect and the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness— 2a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time

Just think how horrible sin is that it caused all the universe to be under a curse. Sin is ugly, and I do not feel we fully understand how our sins effect God. We just blow our sins off as if no one or nothing is effected...especially our hidden sins that no one knows or sees. But they must effect God. Ours sins must hurt him so. Out selfishness, hatred, lust....it must be horrible to see all the sin that is in the world, and yet God still loves us.

Would We Had Been Any Different?

Adam and Eve have the honor in history of not only being the first humans, but also the disgrace of being the first sinners. Eve's sin was that she wanted to have the same knowledge God has of good and evil He never wanted mankind to have.

Genesis 2: 15-17 15And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

16And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

17But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

God never intended for mankind to know EVIL... only GOOD. Adam sin was the same... he wanted the same wisdom as his wife Eve.

Genesis 3: 6 6And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

What was the immediate result of their disobedience to God?

Genesis 3: 7 7And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

Sin had now entered the world for the first time. The world was changed. Theirs eyes were opened to evil that God did not want us to know. Also, suffering and death came into the world at this moment. Adam and Eve freely used their will to sin. They broke relationship with God by sinning.

Now we must ask ourselves who's fault is it? Should we blame and be angry with God? I believe the answer is NO! Should we blame and be angry at Adam and Eve? Again, I believe the answer is also no. I am convinced that if any of us would have been in the same place as they, we would have done the same thing. All I have to do to convince myself I would have made the same bad choice as Adam and Eve is to look at all the sins I have committed in my own life. Please personalize it for yourself and look at your own sins. Be honest. Would you had been any different than our first parents?

God's Love and Redemption

In the same chapter that revealed the fall of man, the very first prophecy every given is made. It ultimately was fulfilled by Jesus Christ. Through this prophecy, God reveals His plan of salvation to us. The prophecy foretells the destruction of God's (and mankind's) adversary-Satan.

Genesis 3 14-15 14And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

15And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Genesis 3: 15 is the very first prophecy found in scripture, and it was spoken by God Himself. It foretells of a seed of a woman (human being) who will ultimately defeat Satan and restore mankind's relationship with God. Note it is not man's seed but the seed of the woman who defeats the devil. This is very important so we can understand who Jesus Christ is and ultimately--who God is. God was prophetically telling us He would send his own Son into the world to be the salvation for all mankind. I do not want to go into detail about this prophecy now. I do in my book I have written. From this prophecy on, God is working for the redemption of mankind without infringing on our "freewill".

The Awesomeness of God

From this beginning, God wanted us to know Him. God wanted us to be in awe of Him...and we should be. Man can be in awe of a beautiful lake, a beautiful sunset, a beautiful mountain. Nature is beautiful and we can look in amazement at all of it's beauty. We give nature the credit, not the one who created it. We should be in awe of the Creator and appreciate nature and NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. God has given us life and that should cause us to sing his praises. But can we understand how great God is? I do not think so...not in our current state in sin. We can get a glimpse of His awesomeness by what Moses wrote below:

Exodus 33: 17-23 7And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.

18And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.

19And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.

20And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.

21And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:

22And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:

23And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.

God the Father's glory is so great it would cause us to die if we were to look upon his face. There are many Bible verses declaring the greatness, the powerfulness, the wonderfulness of God and we should never lose sight of this. My intention however of this chapter is to show the love of God and I want to get started searching the scriptures to do just that.

Old Testament Scripture Declaring the Love of God

Old Testament scripture reveals the God of the Bible I love and worship. There is no other god like him. The God of the Bible is the one true God. All other god's are man made. He is the God of love. Let us look at the evidence found in the Old Testament declaring his love for us.

Exodus 34: 6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, "The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness,

The God of the Bible reveals his love for us by how He commands us to treat a stranger living with us. We are to love him and treat him well.

Leviticus 19: 34 34 The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born. Love him as yourself, for you were aliens in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

The God of the Bible has nade a covenant of love with us. It is a promise He cannot and will not break.

Deuteronomy 7: 9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands.

Deuteronomy 7: 12 12 If you pay attention to these laws and are careful to follow them, then the LORD your God will keep his covenant of love with you, as he swore to your forefathers.

The Bible declares the Lord Our God loves us.

Deuteronomy 23: 5 5 However, the LORD your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the LORD your God loves you.

1 Kings 8: 23 23 and said:
"O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below—you who keep your covenant of love with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way.

Nehemiah 1: 5 5 Then I said:
"O LORD, God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and obey his commands,

Over and over again, man rebells against God, including his chosen people. We continue to do so today. We are stiff-necked, and do not listen to his ways. We have a conscience He has given us, and we refuse to listen. But God continues to love us. He was saying this from the very beginning. The message in the Old Testament is the same as in the New Testament- He forgives us because He loves us. The God the prophet Nehemiah describes below is the God I love.

Nehemiah 9: 17 17 They refused to listen and failed to remember the miracles you performed among them (Do you remember the miracles Jesus performed?). They became stiff-necked and in their rebellion appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Therefore you did not desert them, (God does not and has not deserted us!)

Look at what the book of Psalms reveal about the Love of God:

Psalm 42: 8 8 By day the LORD directs his love,
       at night his song is with me—
       a prayer to the God of my life.

Psalm 48: 9 9 Within your temple, O God,
       we meditate on your unfailing love.

Open your eyes and you can see the good news message of the New Testament found in the Old Testament. God was always saying to us He loves us, wants to forgive us, and to never remember our sins and use them against us.

Psalm 51: 1 1 Have mercy on me, O God,
       according to your unfailing love;
       according to your great compassion
       blot out my transgressions.

God answers prayer and gives us salvation because of His great love.

Psalm 66: 20 20 Praise be to God,
       who has not rejected my prayer
       or withheld his love from me!

Psalm 69: 13 13 But I pray to you, O LORD,
       in the time of your favor;
       in your great love, O God,
       answer me with your sure salvation.

Psalm 70: 4 4 But may all who seek you
       rejoice and be glad in you;
       may those who love your salvation always say,
       "Let God be exalted!"

Psalm 109: 26 26 Help me, O LORD my God;
         save me in accordance with your love.

Look what the Psalmist declares in only one Psalm in the next three verses:

Psalm 86: 5 5 You are forgiving and good, O Lord,
abounding in love to all who call to you.

God's great love will save you from eternal damnation if you will let Him.

Psalm 86: 13 13 For great is your love toward me;
you have delivered me from the depths of the grave.

God is slow to anger,and is compassionate in his love for you.

Psalm 86: 15 15 But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God,
slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.

We should give thanks to the God that saves.

Psalm 136: 26 26 Give thanks to the God of heaven.
His love endures forever.

Through God's people, He reveals his plan for all people, all nations, and all tongues. He longs to bring us back into relationship with Him. He longs for us to say, "You are our God." He wants to plant us for eternity in heaven.

Hosea 2: 23 I will plant her for myself in the land;
       I will show my love to the one I called 'Not my loved one.'
       I will say to those called 'Not my people,' 'You are my people';
       and they will say, 'You are my God.' "

Through God's prophets, we can understand what God requires of us. God is seeking a relationship with us.

Micah 6: 8 8 He has showed you, O man, what is good.
      And what does the LORD require of you?
      To act justly and to love mercy
      and to walk humbly with your God.

The love of God is so very evident in scripture if you will open your heart and mind to Him.

Zephaniah 3: 17 17 The LORD your God is with you,
       he is mighty to save.
       He will take great delight in you,
       he will quiet you with his love,
       he will rejoice over you with singing."

This is only the beginning of the evidence God is love. The God of the Bible reveals Himself fully through the one He sent 2,000 years ago- His Son. The New Testament is the fulfillment of all the love God declares He has for us when He sends His Son to die on the cross for all mankind's sins. Through the shedding of his blood we will have eternal life! Praise God!

God's Love Shown in the New Testament

The apostle John could not have said it better to show the love God has for us.

John 3: 16 16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

In order to see His love, I believe you must understand the only thing separating us from His love is our sin. We have no one to blame but ourselves if we do not sense His love for us. God loves us even when we were sinners.

Romans 5: 8 8But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Nothing will separate us from the love of God that is given to us through Jesus Christ.

Romans 8: 39 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

God is preparing a wonderful place for those who love him.

1 Corinthians 2: 9 9However, as it is written: (See Isaiah 64:4)
   "No eye has seen,
      no ear has heard,
   no mind has conceived
   what God has prepared for those who love him"

The Bible declares the person who loves God is known by God.

1 Corinthians 8: 3 3But the man who loves God is known by God.

It is because of the love of God that our sins are forgiven and we are saved by His loving grace.

Ephesians 2: 4-5 4But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved

Through faith, the love of God enters our being. The love of God is wide, and it is deep. It surpasses all understand and knowledge.

Ephesians 3: 17-19 17so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

From the beginning, God's plan was to save mankind after we fell, way back in Genesis, when Adam ans Eve brought sin into our world. God wants us to know this truth and believe.

2 Thessalonians 2: 13 13But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.

I write about the love of God because I do know the love of God, and I want you to know it too. The apostle John writes:

1 John 4: 8-16 8Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

13We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God. 16And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.
God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.

The God I Serve

This chapter describes the God of the Bible I love and serve. This is the God I want to share with those I meet. It is the reason I wrote the book, "I See Him!...I See Him! God's WORD to Witness By". The love of God is awaiting those who will study the Bible with me using my book. Just as this chapter presents the evidence the love God has for us, I present the evidence from the Bible that the Word of God is absolute truth and we can know for sure we can live forever with the God who created us.
